How to choose the perfect wedding venue?

That depends on your budget and your guest count. If you are a small group with only your dearest loved ones you can choose a small venue or even do an elopement with just the two of you. You can also take a look at my recommendations below.

What is the best time to travel to France?

That depends on your preferences and how you would like your wedding to be.

  • In generell you can say that May to October are the most popular months.
  • Spring (May – June): The weather is mild and the flowers are in full bloom, creating a romantic and fresh atmosphere. The countryside is lush, and venues like vineyards or gardens are particularly beautiful.
  • Summer (July – August): The weather is warm and sunny, perfect for outdoor celebrations. It’s a great time if you want a lively, vibrant atmosphere, especially in coastal or Provence regions. Keep in mind that it’s peak tourist season, so venues and accommodations may be busier.
  • Autumn (September – October): The weather is still warm but not too hot, and the fall foliage adds a golden hue to your photos. This season offers a more intimate vibe and fewer crowds, especially in popular regions like Bordeaux or the Loire Valley.
Should we book a wedding planner?

Absolutely YES. It makes organizing everything on sight so much easier for you. And a wedding planner can help you with all the legalities and ensure everything runs smoothely. Take a look at my recommendations below.

What is an elopement?

An elopement traditionally refers to a marriage ceremony that is conducted in a more private and intimate setting, often with just the couple and a small number of witnesses.

It involves a planned and intentional decision by a couple to have a small, intimate wedding without the elaborate preparations and large guest lists associated with traditional weddings. Couples may choose to elope for various reasons, including a desire for a more personal and private ceremony, avoiding the stress and expenses of a big wedding, or simply wanting a unique and intimate experience.

Elopements can take place in various locations, from a picturesque natural setting to a city hall or a destination of personal significance to the couple.

What are the costs for a wedding in France?

That’s pretty hard to say as it depends on the size, guest count and either you elope or you celebrate a wedding in a venue. But what can be said is, that elopements are normally cheaper as they are focused on a more private and reduced celebration.

Can you legally get married in France?

Yes, as a foreigner, you can legally get married in France. The process generally involves meeting specific legal requirements, and it’s advisable to plan ahead and understand the necessary steps.

  • Residence Requirement: At least one of the couple must have resided in France for 40 days prior to the wedding. This is often one of the more challenging aspects for couples coming from abroad, but it can be done with some careful planning. The residence does not need to be permanent; you can stay in France as a tourist or at a rental property.
  • Marriage at the Town Hall (Mairie): The marriage must take place at a local French town hall (Mairie), and it must be officiated by a French civil officer (Maire or a representative). Religious ceremonies can be held after the civil ceremony but will not be legally binding unless preceded by the official Mairie ceremony.

  • Documents Required: You will need to provide several documents, which may vary slightly depending on the mairie, but typically include:
    • Valid passports or ID cards for both parties.
    • Birth certificates (translated into French, with an official translation if necessary).
    • Proof of residence (showing that at least one of you has been living in France for 40 days).
    • A certificate of celibacy (proving you are not already married).
    • Witnesses: You’ll need at least two witnesses (maximum four) who must also provide identification.
  • Legal Capacity: You must be legally able to marry in your home country, meaning you need to be of legal age and not already married. You may need to show proof of legal capacity to marry (this could vary depending on your nationality).

  • Language Requirements: The ceremony will be conducted in French. If you don’t speak French, you’ll need a translator to assist during the ceremony.

  • Marriage Registration: After the marriage, the ceremony is registered with the French authorities, and you can obtain your marriage certificate. This certificate can be used internationally, but it may need to be translated and notarized for official purposes in your home country.

It’s always recommended to contact the mairie where you plan to marry well in advance to get a clear list of specific documents they require, as the process may vary slightly from one town hall to another.

With proper preparation, getting married in France can be a beautiful and romantic experience for international couples!

But what is an elopement?
An elopement is an intimate wedding where a couple chooses to exchange vows surrounded by nature such as breathtaking peaks and vast, open skies. Far from tradition and crowds, it’s about celebrating love in nature’s quiet embrace, often with just the couple—or a few loved ones—present. It’s raw, romantic, and beautifully personal, letting the scenery be the backdrop to their story.
